AUTO RACING March 23, 2008- Race car driver Kimi Raikkonen wins the Malaysian Grand Prix, the second Formula One race of the season. The Finn claimed the 56-lap race driving for the Ferrari team after starting from second position. Nicknamed “The Ice Man”, Raikkonen has 20 career F1 victories and 1 World Championship from 2007.
BASKETBALL March 20, 1998- Utah Jazz power forward Karl Malone becomes the NBA’s 5th all-time leading scorer. Recruited out of Louisiana Tech in 1985, Malone played 18 seasons for the Jazz and was twice league MVP and 14x NBA All-Star. At retirement, his NBA career scoring points of 36,928 ranked second only to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
FOOTBALL March 24, 1988- San Diego Chargers QB Dan Fouts announces his retirement from pro football after 15 seasons with the NFL. Drafted from the University of Oregon in 1973, he led the Chargers twice to an AFC title game, but never went on to the Super Bowl. Fouts was inducted into the Pro-Football Hall of Fame in 1993, his first eligible year.
BOXING March 18, 1978- The WBC withdraws Leon Spinks’ title of World Heavyweight Champion after he elects to fight Muhammad Ali rather than face the #1 contender, Ken Norton. Spinks had come off a win against Ali just a month earlier, but would lose the second bout 6 months later in a 15th round unanimous decision. It would be his first career loss.
