SOCCER January 12, 2009  Christiano Ronaldo receives the 2008 FIFA World Player Of The Year award. A recipient of many soccer accolades, the Portuguese striker is recognized as one of the best players and most prolific scorers of all time. Ronaldo started with Manchester United in 2003 and then moved to Real Madrid in 2009. He is now with Juventus.

FOOTBALL January 17, 1999  The Atlanta Falcons clinch the NFC Championship, beating the Minnesota Vikings 30-27 in overtime. Vikings placekicker Gary Anderson, posting a perfect field goal record during the season, misses a 4th quarter kick at the NFC Championship. “The Miss” allows the Falcons to tie the game and later win in OT.

BASEBALL January 9, 1989  Johnny Bench and Carl Yastrzemski are inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Possibly the greatest catcher in the game, Bench was a 2x World Series winner (1975, ’76) with the Cincinnati Reds. Yastrzemski was an 18x All-Star, 23-year veteran of the Boston Red Sox, and 2nd in MLB for playing the most games.

HOCKEY January 9, 1979  The Boston Bruins retire Bobby Orr’s #4 jersey. One of the greatest on the ice, Orr spent 12 years in the NHL, 10 of which were with the Boston Bruins. Using speed and playmaking abilities, he revolutionized the defensive position and holds the record for most points and assists as a defenseman. Orr retired in 1978.
