BOXING January 19, 2008- Roy Jones defeats Felix Trinidad in a none-title, 170-lb bout. Both were among the most decorated fighters in the sport with Jones posting a 51-4 record and Trinidad a 42-2. The latter would retire after their encounter, but Jones would go on and become the first middleweight fighter in over 100 years to claim a heavyweight title (2003).
HOCKEY January 18, 1998- The NHL holds its 48th All-Star game. Instead of the traditional Eastern-Western Conference faceoff, the showdown takes an international format with a North America team versus the rest of the world. Since Canadians comprised most of the NA squad, the match was used as their tune up for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Nagano.
BASKETBALL January 17, 1988- Atlanta Hawks’ forward Dominique Wilkins is named player of the week. Wilkins played for the Georgia Bulldogs before joining the NBA in 1982 and spent most of his career with the Hawks. Considered one of the best dunkers in history, he retired in 1999 with a career record of 24.8 ppg, 6.7 rpg, and 2.5 apg.
FOOTBALL January 15, 1978- The Dallas Cowboys defeat the Denver Broncos 27-10 in Super Bowl XII. Making their 4th Super Bowl trip, the Cowboys were favored by 6 points after posting a 12-2 season record. The Dallas defense dominated the game, forcing 8 turnovers and only 8 pass completions by Denver. Two defensemen shared the game MVP award.
